How much is tax, title and license in California?
Six charges make up the total: sales tax, a title fee, a registration fee, the CHP fee, and two fees worked from the vehicle's value. Sales tax is the largest by far. This is what each comes to on a $30,000 vehicle, before district tax.

District sales tax: why your rate is not just 7.25%
7.25% is the statewide rate. Many cities and counties add a district tax on top, which CDTFA lists at 0.10% to 2.00%, and more than one district can apply to the same address. Because the rate depends on where you live, the calculator asks for it instead of guessing. Look your address up with the CDTFA rate lookup, then enter the district portion. On a $30,000vehicle, a 1.25% district tax adds $375.00, taking sales tax from $2,175.00to $2,550.00. Until you enter one, the result is marked as the state rate only.
Trade-ins do not lower California sales tax
In some states, trading in a car lowers the price you are taxed on. California is not one of them. CDTFA's motor vehicle dealer guide says the allowance for a trade-in cannot be excluded from the amount tax is based on: sell a car for $20,000, accept a$4,000 trade-in, and tax is still worked from $20,000. On a $30,000 vehicle, a $10,000 trade-in leaves the sales tax at $2,175.00. That guide is written for dealers, which is why this calculator is built for dealer purchases.
The DMV fees that depend on value
Two California fees rise with the price. The vehicle license fee is 0.65% of the vehicle's purchase price or value. The transportation improvement fee is a flat amount for each value band, so it steps up sharply at each boundary:
Vehicle value
Transportation improvement fee
$0 to $4,999
$33
$5,000 to $24,999
$66
$25,000 to $34,999
$132
$35,000 to $59,999
$198
$60,000 or more
$231
A vehicle at $24,999 pays a $66 transportation improvement fee; at $25,000 it pays $132. DMV decides the value these fees use, so this estimate uses your purchase price, which can differ, especially for a used vehicle.
What this estimate leaves out
County and district registration fees. We could not find these published on the DMV pages we read, so they are not included — check current California DMV guidance.
The $121 road improvement fee DMV lists for model-year 2020 and newer zero-emission vehicles.
Dealer documentation fees. DMV says a dealer's document preparation fee may not exceed $65, or $80 for certain dealers.
Private-party purchases. The tax handling is different and we have not verified it.
The exact title fee: Last confirmed January 2023 at $25 (DMV notice VIN 2023-02, CVC section 9254). DMV's current fees page lists $28 for a replacement title, which was the same amount as the title-only fee in 2023, so the range runs from $25 to $28. Check current California DMV guidance for the exact current figure.
California vehicle tax FAQ
How much is sales tax on a car in California?
The statewide rate is 7.25%, and most addresses add a district tax on top. CDTFA lists district taxes of 0.10% to 2.00%, and more than one can apply. On a $30,000 vehicle the state rate alone is $2,175.00; with a 1.25% district tax it is $2,550.00.
Does a trade-in reduce sales tax in California?
No. CDTFA's motor vehicle dealer guide says the allowance for a trade-in cannot be excluded from the amount tax is based on. Its example is a $20,000 car with a $4,000 trade-in: tax is still worked from $20,000. That is why this calculator has no trade-in box.
How is the California vehicle license fee calculated?
DMV lists the vehicle license fee (VLF) as 0.65% of the vehicle's purchase price or value. DMV determines the value, so this estimate uses your purchase price. On $30,000 that is $195.00.
What is the transportation improvement fee?
A DMV fee set by vehicle value in five bands, from $33 to $231. It steps up at each band, so a vehicle at $25,000 pays $132, while one at $24,999 pays $66.
How much is the California DMV title fee?
Between $25 and $28. It was last confirmed at $25 in January 2023 (DMV notice VIN 2023-02). DMV raises fees with the consumer price index each January, and its current fees page lists $28 for a replacement title, which matched the title-only fee in 2023. Check current California DMV guidance for the exact current figure.
How do I find my district tax rate?
Use the CDTFA rate lookup at maps.cdtfa.ca.gov with your address, then enter the district portion (the rate above 7.25%) in the calculator. Left blank, the estimate uses the state rate only and says so.
Does this include county registration fees?
No. We could not find county and district registration fees published on the DMV pages we read, so they are not included. Check current California DMV guidance for those.
Does this work for a private-party purchase?
It is built for a dealer purchase. Private-party purchases have their own tax handling, and we have not verified it, so it is not covered here.
Are you covering other states?
Yes. Texas and New York are live too, and more states are coming. Each state uses its own published rules. Pick your state on the vehicle tax, title and license calculator by state.
